What is GHK Cu
GHK Cu is a tripeptide-copper complex of the amino acids glycine, histidine and lysine (GHK), bound to a divalent copper ion. It occurs naturally in human blood plasma and was first isolated by Loren Pickart in 1973. The plasma concentration decreases with age: young adults have around 200 ng/ml, from 60 years of age it is rather 80 ng/ml.
Chemical name: L-lysyl-L-histidyl-glycine Cupric Acetate. CAS No GHK: 49557-75-7. Molecular weight GHK Cu complex: about 402 g/mol. In the cosmetics and skin care market under INCI names such as "Copper Tripeptide-1" led.
The cosmetic application in serums and creams is established and approved in the EU as an ingredient. As an injectable research peptide, however, GHK Cu is not recognized by drug law.
Mechanism of action
GHK Cu acts through several mechanisms, all related to the function of the copper ion. Copper is co-factor for several tissue regeneration enzymes, including lysyl oxidase, which cross-links collagen and elastin.
First, GHK Cu stimulates the synthesis of collagen types I and III, as well as elastin, glycosaminoglycans and proteoglycans in fibroblasts. Second, it inhibits matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that degrade collagen. Third, it promotes angiogenesis, similar to BPC-157 and TB-500.
Fourth, it has demonstrable anti-inflammatory effects via modulation of gene expression. Pickart group and other researchers showed that GHK Cu affects the expression of over 4000 human genes, many related to tissue regeneration, DNA repair and anti-aging pathways.
Fifth, GHK Cu appears to have antioxidant effects, partly directly, partly by increasing the body’s own antioxidants such as SOD activity.

Study situation
The scientific basis is more extensive than many other research peptides, because GHK has been studied for more than 50 years and is used commercially in cosmetic applications.

Note: Most human studies are topical, not systemic. Subcutaneously injected GHK Cu has no controlled clinical trials at hand. The transferability of topical effects to systemic application is not established.
What is clear: GHK Cu has real biological effects on fibroblasts and tissue regeneration. What remains unclear: whether systemic injection achieves clinically relevant effects beyond what the body’s own GHK does anyway.
Mixing (reconstitution)
Typical Vial sizes: 50 mg, 100 mg, 200 mg lyophilisate (higher amounts than BPC-157, because typical doses are in the low milligram range).
- 50 mg Vial with 2 ml bacteriostatic water → 25 mg/ml
- 100 mg Vial with 5 ml → 20 mg/ml
- 100 mg Vial with 2 ml → 50 mg/ml for low injection volumes
After mixing cooling 2 to 8 degrees, stability about 30 days. Lyophilisateeeee stable at -20 degrees over years. Solution should be clear to slightly bluish (copper complex), no clouding.
Dosage range (research data)
There are no established clinical protocols for systemic GHK Cu. In the research and self-application community, the following areas circulate:
- Subcutaneous: 1 to 3 mg per day
- Topical (skin care): 0.1 to 2 percent in creams/seras
- Frequency: daily or every other day
- Cycle duration: 4 to 8 weeks, then break
These values are research references, non-clinically validated doses.
Side effects
Very well tolerated in topical applications. With systemic injection, the data is limited, anecdotal:
- Local irritation at the injection site
- Rare nausea or fatigue
- Theoretical risk of copper overdose: GI symptoms, liver effects
- In case of active tumor disease caution due to pro-angiogenic effect
- Wilson's disease (copper metabolism disorder) contraindicated
The total daily copper intake should be monitored. A standard dose of GHK Cu contains around 30 to 60 mcg of copper, which is in the range of the recommended daily dose (0.9 mg for adults). When combined with copper-containing supplements, the overall load can increase.
Half-Life and Pharmacokinetics
The half-life in the plasma is short, in the range of a few minutes with intravenous administration. Subcutaneously slightly longer due to delayed absorption.
Topically, GHK Cu penetrates the epidermis and dermis. The penetration is measurable, the copper complex is small enough for relevant skin depths.
Oral bioavailability low, GHK is degraded in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, the preference for topical or injectable administration.
Frequent questions
What is the difference between GHK and GHK Cu? GHK is the tripeptide alone, GHK Cu is the complex with a copper ion. Biological activity depends heavily on copper, GHK without copper is far less effective.
Topical or Injected? Topically has the more solid clinical database (wrinkle reduction, wound healing). Subcutaneous is anecdotally popular for systemic anti-aging effects, but without controlled studies.
Does GHK Cu help against hair loss? There are in vitro data on hair follicles stimulation and some small clinical studies on topical formulations. Effect size is moderate, far less than with finasteride or minoxidil.
How long does it take for skin effects to be visible? In topical studies, improvements in skin elasticity are typically seen after 8 to 12 weeks of daily use.
Why the blue color? The copper complex absorbs light in the visible spectrum, hence the characteristic blue-greenish coloration in solution. If the coloring disappears, the complex is probably decayed.
Legal status U.S.
Status 2026: GHK Cu has an interesting double status in the EU. As a cosmetic ingredient, it is approved and regulated. As an injectable research peptide, it is not approved under pharmaceutical law, the distribution takes place in the research-use-only rail.
WADA status: GHK Cu is currently not on the prohibited list. Status can change when applying competition check current list.
